Track the Live Price of Gold per Ounce in the UK
The gold price per ounce is the internationally recognised benchmark for valuing gold. In the UK, the live spot price is quoted in pounds sterling (GBP) and fluctuates constantly as the global markets react to movements in supply and demand. A range of factors can influence this, including currency strength, geopolitical events, economic issues, and changes in central bank policies.
Our live chart shows the current spot price of gold per troy ounce and also provides access to historical pricing data, allowing you to track long-term trends as well as short-term movements in the price.
The Troy Ounce Explained
Gold is measured and priced using the troy ounce, a unit of weight that has been used in precious metals trading for centuries. One troy ounce is equal to 31.10 grams, which is slightly heavier than the standard (avoirdupois) ounce sometimes used for other goods.
This measurement is the global standard for most gold bullion and is often used when pricing gold bars and bullion coins.
Why the Gold Price per Ounce is Important
Most gold bullion products are valued using the gold price per troy ounce. Gold coins and bars are priced using the spot price per ounce as a base, with a premium often added to take manufacturing, business costs, delivery, and market demand into account.
Keeping track of the gold price in troy ounces allows you to make informed decisions when looking to buy or sell your gold.
Calculating the Gold Price per Ounce
The price shown on our chart displays the value of fine (24ct) gold per troy ounce. If you need to compare this with gold priced by weight in grams, you can use the following conversion:
- Gold price per ounce ÷ 31.1035 = gold price per gram
For example, if the live gold price per ounce is £3,000:
- £3,000 ÷ 31.1035 = £96.45 per gram
This conversion can be useful when comparing bullion bars of different weights or assessing smaller gold items.
