Gold and Silver Price Update: A Volatile Start to October
Pressure from inflation and interest rates
Gold began October at around £3,150 an ounce, before falling to almost 2% below its starting price at its lowest point mid-month. The price has since recovered, with the gold price now sitting around 0.28% below its level at the start of the month.
Silver has experienced an even sharper decline, falling by around 8% since the beginning of the month.
One factor that appears to be influencing price is US inflation. Figures released this week showed annual inflation rising from 3.4% to 3.7% in September, above the forecasted 3.6%.
Persistent inflation could make it more difficult for the US Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, which could have an impact on precious metals as investors may choose to turn away from gold and silver to interest-bearing investments.
Oil price uncertainty and steady demand
Tensions involving Iran and concerns about oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz may have also influenced the markets. Rising oil prices can add to inflation, potentially keeping interest rates higher for longer.
However, geopolitical uncertainty can also encourage interest in gold and silver as a safe-haven store of value. Longer-term demand can also provide support, as central banks are continuing to add gold to their reserves, and silver continues to benefit from its uses in industries such as solar energy and electronics.
What could happen to gold and silver next?
UK economic figures released late this week offered some reassurance ahead of the Budget on 28th October. The economy grew by 0.1% in August, beating expectations of a 0.1% contraction. Sterling’s initial reaction to this has been limited so far, so a close eye should be kept on the Pound’s movements against the US Dollar as this could be an important factor for precious metal prices.
With the Budget fast approaching, prices could remain unsettled. There is some speculation around possible tax rises for higher earners, including possible changes to Capital Gains Tax.
While no changes have been confirmed yet, the announcements may influence market confidence and add to uncertainty around precious metal prices.
For now, the recent dips in price may present a potential buying opportunity. There may be no definitive way to know exactly which direction prices may go in the short term, but gold and silver’s longer-term appeal and continued demand offer reasons to remain optimistic.
