The Iranian 1 Azadi Gold Coin features either a portrait of Ruhollah Khomeini, the Ayatollah who founded the Islamic Republic of Iran. Earlier coins feature a beautiful geometric design.
The reverse of the coin features a mosque design.

The Bahar Azadi coin was first minted in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution and replaced the Pahlavi coin which was named for the Iranian Royal family, the previous controlling regime in Iran. The name of the coin translates to “The Spring of Freedom” and symbolises freedom from the monarchy.
