The obverse of the coin bears the official seal of Rwanda and the monetary denomination of 50 Francs.

The African shoebill is a very large stork-like bird which derives its name from its enormous shoe-shaped bill. The shoebill lives in the freshwater swamps of central tropical Africa, from southern Sudan through parts of eastern Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, western Tanzania and northern Zambia.
